Teterboro: New York's Private Front Door
Teterboro is the business airport closest to Manhattan, 12 miles from Midtown. Its two runways, the 100,000 lb weight limit, the night restraint and when Westchester or Newark makes more sense.

Teterboro, in New Jersey, is the business aviation airport closest to Manhattan. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns it, puts it 12 miles from Midtown by road, via the George Washington Bridge or the Lincoln Tunnel. It has no scheduled airlines, two runways of about 7,000 ft and 6,000 ft, several FBOs and one rule that defines it more than any other: no aircraft may operate there above 100,000 lb.
The front door, and why it is busy
Teterboro exists to keep private and business flights away from the airline airports. It is the general aviation reliever in a Port Authority system that also includes Newark, JFK and LaGuardia, and it carries a dense mix of corporate jets, charter aircraft, fractional fleets and helicopters. The airport sits inside some of the busiest airspace in the world, close to Newark's arrival and departure paths, so delays are more often caused by air traffic flow restrictions than by anything on the ground. On busy days, allow more time than the flight itself suggests.
Runways and the 100,000 lb rule
Runway 1/19 is 6,997 ft (2,133 m) long and runway 6/24 is 6,014 ft (1,833 m), both 150 ft wide. That is ample for most business jets. The constraint is weight. No aircraft may operate at Teterboro above 100,000 lb, and operators of aircraft able to exceed that figure must certify to the airport that they will stay below it.
The rule matters for the largest current jets. Ultra-long-range aircraft such as the Gulfstream G700 and the Bombardier Global 7500 have maximum take-off weights above 100,000 lb, so at Teterboro they operate at reduced weight, which in practice means less fuel and less range on departure. A nonstop to the Gulf or East Asia may need a fuel stop that would not be needed from Newark or JFK. Range Check shows how far each aircraft reaches from a given departure airport.
Noise rules and night flights
Teterboro is open 24 hours, but the Port Authority asks operators to refrain from non-essential flights between 23:00 and 06:00, and operators who ignore the restraint receive a reminder letter. Noise is monitored around the airport, runway 24 is designated noise critical, and the published maximum noise levels are lower at night than by day. The oldest and noisiest Stage 1 jets are not permitted at all.
None of this stops a modern jet from arriving late, but a planned departure at midnight is exactly what the airport and its neighbours want to avoid. If a late evening flight is unavoidable, the operator should say so at the quote stage.
FBOs and getting into Manhattan
Teterboro has several FBOs around the field. The operator usually chooses, and the differences passengers notice are the lounge, how directly cars reach the aircraft and how quickly the aircraft is turned. The drive into Manhattan crosses the Hudson by the George Washington Bridge or the Lincoln Tunnel, and the time it takes depends on traffic far more than on the 12 miles. Helicopter operators offer transfers to the Manhattan heliports for those who want to avoid the crossings. What makes a great FBO lists the signs worth noticing on the ramp.
Alternatives: Westchester, Newark and JFK
- Westchester County (White Plains): north of the city, with a main runway of 6,549 ft, it suits passengers bound for the northern suburbs and Connecticut.
- Newark and JFK: airline airports, but without Teterboro's weight limit, so they are the usual choice for the heaviest jets departing at full weight on the longest routes.
- Smaller airports in New Jersey and on Long Island: useful for particular destinations, each with its own runway lengths and hours.

Questions
How far is Teterboro from Manhattan?
The Port Authority puts Teterboro 12 miles from Midtown Manhattan by road, via the George Washington Bridge or the Lincoln Tunnel. Traffic on the crossings decides the journey time more than the distance.
What is the weight limit at Teterboro Airport?
No aircraft may operate at Teterboro above 100,000 lb, about 45 tonnes. Operators of aircraft that can exceed that weight must certify that they will stay below it, which usually means carrying less fuel.
Is Teterboro open at night?
Teterboro is open 24 hours, but the Port Authority asks operators to avoid non-essential flights between 23:00 and 06:00 under a voluntary restraint, and noise limits are stricter at night.
Should I fly into Teterboro or Westchester?
It depends on where you are going. Teterboro is closest to Midtown, while Westchester County Airport, north of the city with a 6,549 ft main runway, suits the northern suburbs and Connecticut.
