Dubai by Private Jet: Two Airports, Two Approaches

Dubai International is minutes from Downtown but built around the airline hub; Al Maktoum at Dubai World Central handles most business aviation. Which suits whom, and when it is busiest.

Dubai has two international airports, and for a private flight the choice between them matters more than the distance on the map. Dubai International (DXB) is about a quarter of an hour from Downtown but built around the airline hub, with tight slots in its busy waves and parking that is hard to obtain. Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC), about 37 km south-west of the city, is where most of Dubai's business aviation now happens, with a VIP terminal, several FBOs and far more room.

Dubai International: close, but crowded

DXB (OMDB) has two parallel runways of 4,447 m and 4,351 m at an elevation of 62 ft (19 m), and it operates around the clock. Private passengers use the Executive Flight Services terminal near Terminal 2, with its own immigration and customs, private lounges and a hangar. The difficulty is capacity. DXB is the home base of two large hub airlines, and during their waves of arrivals and departures, slots for business aircraft are hard to confirm. Parking requests, especially at short notice, are often declined.

DXB suits a short visit with a confirmed slot, a drop and go, or a passenger who values the short drive to Downtown, Deira or the business districts along Sheikh Zayed Road above everything else.

Al Maktoum (DWC): the business aviation airport

DWC (OMDW) lies inland near Jebel Ali, at 170 ft (52 m). Its main runway, 12/30, is 4,500 m (14,764 ft) long. Business aviation is grouped in the Mohammed Bin Rashid Aerospace Hub, part of the Dubai South district, where several FBOs share a large purpose-built VIP terminal next to the Dubai Airshow site and others run their own facilities. Slots and parking are easier to obtain than at DXB, though hangar space is in demand. Volume keeps rising: Dubai's government media office reported a record 20,289 business aviation movements there in 2025, 17 per cent more than the year before.

The trade-off is the drive. Dubai Marina is roughly 20 to 40 minutes away by car, the Palm Jumeirah around 35 to 40 minutes and Downtown about 35 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. For hotels and villas towards Jebel Ali, DWC is the nearer airport.

A common compromise is to land passengers at DXB and send the aircraft to DWC to park, which needs a slot at both airports and a short positioning flight of about 25 nm. Over the long term the picture will shift: Dubai plans to move its airline hub to an expanded DWC and eventually close DXB, but that is years away and does not change how this season works.

Seasons and events

The busy season follows the weather. From roughly October to April the city is at its most comfortable and its most crowded, with New Year and the large exhibitions and conferences driving the peaks. The government links recent growth in private flights to events such as GITEX Global, the World Government Summit and the Dubai Airshow, held at Dubai World Central in November of odd-numbered years. In an airshow week, ramp space at DWC comes under pressure of its own. In summer, temperatures regularly pass 40°C, which affects aircraft performance and makes it worth confirming ground power and cabin cooling before boarding.

Practical points

  • Landing permits may be required for private and charter flights into the UAE. The operator arranges them, but they need lead time.
  • From Europe, Dubai is a long sector: London is about 2,960 nm away on the great circle, a trip for super midsize and larger jets. The range check shows which aircraft make it nonstop.
  • If the aircraft will stay for several days, ask for DWC parking even if passengers arrive at DXB.
  • The guide to FBO fees explains handling and parking charges, and the charter cost estimator gives an indicative price band for the flight.

Questions

Which Dubai airport is best for a private jet?

For most private flights Al Maktoum at Dubai World Central, where slots and parking are easier and several FBOs share a VIP terminal. Dubai International is closer to Downtown and works well for short visits or a drop and go, but its slots are tight during the airline hub waves.

How far is Al Maktoum airport from Dubai Marina?

Roughly 20 to 40 minutes by car, depending on traffic. Downtown is about 35 to 45 minutes away, and the Palm Jumeirah around 35 to 40 minutes.

Can private jets still use Dubai International?

Yes. Private passengers use the Executive Flight Services terminal near Terminal 2, with its own customs and immigration. Slots are hard to confirm in the airline peaks and parking is often declined, so many aircraft drop passengers there and park at Dubai World Central.
