Ibiza by Private Jet: Summer Season at the GA Terminal

Ibiza has a long runway, a general aviation terminal and 24-hour summer operations, but little parking in July and August. How slots, drop and go and the boat to Formentera fit together.

Ibiza handles private jets on a long runway close to town, with a general aviation terminal and round-the-clock operations in summer. What it lacks in July and August is room. Every arrival and departure needs a slot, overnight parking is often refused, and larger aircraft need prior permission to stay more than a few hours. The trip works best planned as a drop and go, with the aircraft parked elsewhere and Formentera reached by boat.

The airport

Ibiza airport (LEIB) lies about 7 km south-west of Ibiza Town, roughly 15 minutes by car. Its single runway, 06/24, is 2,800 m (9,186 ft) long at an elevation of 24 ft (7 m), enough for any business jet in regular use. In the summer peak the airport is open 24 hours a day. Passengers on private flights use the general aviation terminal, and customs officers are on duty from 08:00 to 19:00 local time, with overtime on request.

Passengers arriving from outside the Schengen area clear customs at the general aviation terminal and immigration in the main passenger terminal, so allow a little extra time. Luggage checks by the authorities are routine on arrival and departure, which adds a few minutes. Handlers ask for the full schedule, aircraft details and passenger names at least 48 hours ahead, and the FBO arrival checklist covers what to send.

Slots and parking in July and August

The Balearic peak runs from June to September. July and August are the tightest months, and weekends the busiest days. The rules that matter:

  • Slots are mandatory for every arrival and departure. Spanish airports generally accept requests from 14 to 15 days before the flight, and not earlier.
  • Parking is very limited and confirmed late, often only close to the day of operation. A change of schedule can cancel a confirmed parking and require a fresh request.
  • In summer, aircraft with a wingspan over 18 m that stay on the ground for more than three hours need prior permission. That covers most midsize and larger jets.
  • Even without parking, a slot for a drop-off or a pick-up can usually be obtained.

That last point is the key to most Ibiza trips. The aircraft lands, the passengers leave, and the jet repositions to Palma or to the Spanish mainland. Palma is somewhat easier but heavily congested too, and between June and October it limits aircraft longer than 20 m to a seven-day stay unless the airport agrees otherwise. The Palma general aviation profile has the details. The two positioning legs cost money, and the charter cost estimator helps judge whether a parked aircraft or two empty sectors make more sense.

Formentera: the last miles are by sea

Formentera has no airport, so the final leg is by boat. Fast ferries from Ibiza port to La Savina take about half an hour, and the port is roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the airport by car. Private boats and yacht tenders can meet passengers in the harbour, which avoids the ferry timetable and the August queues at the terminal. A day on Formentera followed by an evening flight out needs a generous margin, because sea conditions and harbour traffic are less predictable than a slot time.

Timing advice

  • Fly midweek if the dates are flexible. Saturdays and Sundays in July and August are the hardest days for slots and parking.
  • Request slots on the day the window opens, for the departure as well as the arrival.
  • Treat confirmed parking as fragile. If the schedule moves, assume the parking has to be requested again.
  • Fuel is listed as available around the clock, but on peak days uplift can be slow. Many crews refuel on arrival rather than just before departure.
  • Ask the operator what the positioning legs of a drop and go will cost, and whether an empty leg could offset part of it.
  • Book cars, boats and hotels early. Crew accommodation in particular is limited and expensive from June to September.

Questions

Does Ibiza airport have a private jet terminal?

Yes. Private passengers use the general aviation terminal, where customs is staffed from 08:00 to 19:00 local time with overtime on request. Passengers from outside the Schengen area complete immigration in the main passenger terminal.

Can I leave a private jet parked in Ibiza in August?

Often not. Parking is very limited, confirmed late and frequently refused, and aircraft with a wingspan over 18 m staying more than three hours need prior permission in summer. Most operators plan a drop and go, with the aircraft parked in Palma or on the mainland.

How do you get to Formentera after landing in Ibiza?

Formentera has no airport. From the airport it is 15 to 20 minutes by car to Ibiza port, then about 30 minutes by fast ferry to La Savina, or a private boat or yacht tender from the harbour.
