What Private Jet Charter Costs: Hourly Rates and the Extras

Indicative hourly charter rates per jet class for autumn 2026, before VAT, and how a real quote is built from flight time, positioning, fees, crew costs, de-icing and taxes.

Private jet charter in Europe costs, indicatively, from about 2,800 euros per flight hour for a very light jet to 17,000 euros or more for an ultra long range jet (autumn 2026, before VAT, not a quote). The hourly rate is only the starting point. A real quote adds positioning flights, airport and handling fees, crew expenses, variable costs such as de-icing and catering, and taxes. On short trips those extras can move the total more than the choice of aircraft.

Where a trip lands within a band depends on the aircraft's age and cabin, the operator, where the aircraft is based, the season and the fuel price. Peak dates such as Christmas and New Year in the Alps or summer weekends on the Mediterranean push rates up and availability down. In the United States, rates are quoted in dollars and follow their own market.

How a quote is built

  • Flight time. Operators charge by flight hour or by block hour, which includes taxiing. At large airports taxi time adds up.
  • Positioning. If the aircraft is based elsewhere, the empty flights to your departure airport and back home after your arrival are usually billed. This is why a one-way trip costs more than half a return, and why empty legs exist.
  • Daily minimums. On multi-day trips, many operators charge a minimum number of flight hours for each day the aircraft and crew wait for you.
  • Landing, handling and parking. Airport and FBO charges vary widely with the airport, the aircraft's weight and the season; the guide to FBO fees breaks them down.
  • Crew expenses. Hotels and allowances for overnight stops, indicatively a few hundred euros per crew member per night, more in resorts in high season.
  • De-icing. Billed at cost when needed, which on a large jet in winter can mean several thousand euros.
  • Catering and extras. Usually billed at cost, as are special requests, ground transport and, on some aircraft, connectivity.
  • Taxes. VAT depends on the route and the countries involved. Passenger taxes can be substantial: the UK raised the higher rate of air passenger duty that applies to larger private jets by an additional 50 per cent from April 2026, France sharply increased its solidarity tax on departing passengers in 2025 with separate, higher rates for business aviation, and US domestic charter carries a 7.5 per cent federal excise tax plus segment fees.

A worked example

Take a two hour flight in a light jet. At the indicative band of 3,800 to 5,200 euros per hour, the flight time alone comes to 7,600 to 10,400 euros. If the nearest suitable aircraft has to fly an hour empty to collect you and an hour empty back to base after dropping you off, the billable time doubles to four hours, or 15,200 to 20,800 euros, before fees and taxes. Find an aircraft already at your departure airport, or one that needs to fly your route anyway, and the positioning disappears. The location of an aircraft can matter as much as its class.

The Charter Cost Estimator runs this kind of calculation for any pair of airports and cabin class and shows an indicative price band.

Reading a quote

Two quotes for the same trip are only comparable if they include the same things. Before choosing, ask:

  • Is the price all-inclusive, or are fees and taxes added at cost?
  • Which aircraft type, which year of build and which operator?
  • Is positioning included, and what happens if the aircraft changes?
  • What triggers extra charges: de-icing, waiting time, extra stops, schedule changes?
  • How is VAT treated on this route?
  • What are the cancellation terms?

The last point deserves its own reading. The checklist on the charter contract covers cancellation scales and variable costs in detail.

Questions

How much does it cost to charter a private jet per hour?

Indicatively, about 2,800 to 3,800 euros per flight hour for a very light jet, 3,800 to 5,200 for a light jet, 6,500 to 8,800 for a super midsize and 11,500 to 17,000 for an ultra long range jet (autumn 2026, before VAT, positioning and fees excluded). These are not quotes; the actual price depends on the aircraft, the operator, the route and the season.

Why is a one-way private jet charter so expensive?

Because the aircraft usually has to return to its base, or fly to its next job, without passengers, and that positioning time is often billed to you. A one-way flight can therefore cost much more than half a return. Empty legs and aircraft based close to your destination are the ways around it.

Is VAT charged on private jet charter?

It depends on the countries and the route. Domestic flights within an EU country are commonly subject to VAT, while international flights are often zero-rated or exempt, but the rules differ between countries. Ask for VAT to be shown separately on the quote.

What extra costs are added to a private jet quote?

Typical extras are positioning flights, landing, handling and parking fees, crew hotels and allowances, de-icing in winter, catering, passenger taxes and VAT. Some quotes include them, others bill them at cost after the trip, so compare quotes on the same basis.
